Yeah... So I opened up the 30th, took one look and bailed out pretty quickly. No way was I going to get too involved inside this amplifier. I've serviced it before but not changed valves and as I've said before get a pro to do it if you're unsure!!! So I did...
So, I'm fitting out with original Svetlana Winged 'C' 6L6's for the power stage and JJ-Tesla ECC83S for the pre-amp. The 30th takes 11 valves so it's never going to be a cheap or easy exercise. In the research I've read over at Watford Valves both these choices are top of the pile. The JJ's appear to be the best of the current production valves available today. The only other way you might be able to top these are to source some New Old Stock or original Mullard's, if you do find some expect to pay top money! I've seen some part used singles going toward the £80 area!! However back to the real world, it's said JJ's will tame the treble in Marshall and Fender amps, they are very warm and rich, I was impressed with them when I installed them into my Blackstar and an added bonus is the construction is rugged, just what's required for life on the road.
My Marshall 30th Anniversary finally needs to be re-valved after a good four years of use... Not bad huh!? After replacing the stock valves in my Blackstar with some original SED Svetlana Winged C's I'm gonna do the same again with the Marshall, these are fantastic sounding valves!!! Now my 30th was fitted with 6L6's from the factory, Marshall did this in the 1990's when decent EL34's were in scant supply. Many users decided to modify their amps to EL34's later after production became more reliable and widely available, however I like the sound the 6L6's give so I'm sticking with them for this replacement.
I've ordered the Winged C's from Watford Valves who guarantee they are original Svets which pre-date the New Sensor take over, you can see them here. Many valve aficionados say that the current production valves are no where near as good as the originals in both quality and sound. I'll post up another project report once they arrive, however and this is a big however, upon reading up how to bias a 30th anniversary I'm seriously thinking about taking it to Essex Amp Repairs. General consensus around the internet is that biasing is no easy task when dealing with a 30th! As I said in my Blackstar report basically if you don't know what your doing take your amp to someone qualified. Once I open her up and take a look inside I shall decide whether to stick with my own advice!
Yet another mobile OS is on it's way, this time it's Mozilla the non profit organisation behind the popular Firefox web browser and they are planning to bring the power of the internet to phone software. They say they want to compete with the three big boys of the current mobile OS market, these being Apple's iOS, Google's Android and of Course Microsoft's offering of Window's Mobile.
The thing that really clinched the deal was the fact that there are few really good iPhone and iPad blogging apps available, allowing the user to edit and create articles right from their portable tablet or phone. This alone is worth gold and a major reason for me to come back and experiment with WP again.
For a while now I've been toying with the idea to make the transition to Mac. Bored with the usual windoze OS and wanting something different, Apple seems to be gaining more and more popularity as the computer and OS of choice. I've tried Ubuntu, the very friendly non techy Linux offering which I have to say is extremely good. However it's not loaded enough for my needs.
With a new 8 mega pixel camera and HD 1080p recording, A5 processor Apple claimed that it may look the same but inside it's all new!? It will run the new iOS5 however which does come with Siri, the long awaited voice activation assistant which would prove useful. Will launch on October 14th in the UK with 16, 32, and 64GB capacity.
Apart from the awesome camera is it worth the upgrade? Well, for me no, it's not. The price of the iPhone 4 will drop as mobile companies try to shift the 4S, so if you still have a 3xx, save yourself some cash and get a cheaper 4!
There is rumour that Apple will launch the 5 in early 2012, I think I'll be patient and hang on until then. In the meantime, I guess Apple will still sell bucket loads of the 4S as die hard fans and general suckers will be swallowed by the powerful Apple marketing machine.
It will be interesting to see what prices these are thrown out there for, if the phone itself is a disappointment then the price will surely put everyone off in these austere times...
Just seen that Google+ finally opens up to it's public. I've been lucky enough to get on with an invite and have been using it for a few months. There's not a great deal of people using it and the tumble weed is begining to blow through. Will it be a Facebook killer?
Well, I thought the G+ interface is quite good and I like the idea of 'Cirlces' which enables you to filter who see's your posts. This makes priviacy far better than Facebook offerings... Well up until recently when they itroduced something similar with a drop down box in the post area. I'm not so sure that the FB version is as intuative as G+. the site has already surpassed 25 million members and is expected to reach 100 million members by the end of 2011. In 2004, it took Facebook 10 months to reach 1 million users. We will see...
